Final Tribute Paid to
Planter From Bellevue
Friends and relatives paid tribute yesterday morning to Benjamin "Ben" Devalcourt, 65 years, well known planter of the Opelousas-Bellevue section, who died Sunday.

Mr. Devalcourt passed away at the family home following a illness of four months.

The body rested at the First National Funeral home until 10 o'clock Monday morning. Services were read at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic church with Father Clifford Gaudin officiating. Interment was in the St. Landry Catholic cemetery.

A native of Grand Coteau, Mr. Devalcourt had resided in the Bellevue section most of his life. He is survived by his wife: a daughter, Mrs. Fred Mayer, wife of Dr. Mayer of Opelousas; one brother, Alexon Devalcourt of Sunset, Misses Laura and Lou Devalcourt both of New Orleans; and three grandchildren.

Active pallbearers who served at Mr. Devalcourt's funeral were Lee Savoy, Pat Dufilho, Dr. Fred Mayer, Lionel Mayer, Butch Sudduth, and Alexander Devalcourt.

Honorary pallbearers were Simon Stelly, Herbert Fontenot, Alexandria Peck, Nap Franchebois, Vitalis Savoy, and J. B. Savoy.

BENJAMIN DEVALCOURT

Opelousas, Feb 19 -- Rites were held this morning for Benjamin "Ben" Devalcourt, 65, who died Sunday morning at his residence here after a lengthy illness.

The Rev. Clifford Gaudin officiated at the services, held at 10 a. m. today at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic church. Burial was in the local cemetery, with the First National funeral home in charge.

The father-in-law of Dr. Fred Mayer, Opelousas, Devalcourt was a well known planter and native of Grand Coteau. He made his home for many years in the Bellevue-Opelousas section.

Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Mayer; a brother, Alexon Devalcourt, Sunset; two sisters, Misses Laura and Lou Devalcourt, both of New Orleans, and three grandchildren.
