NOTE: A cemetery transcription published in 1981 indicates that a headstone was present at some point, with year of birth listed as 1788 and year of death listed as 1857.

Robert Burleigh fils was the son of Charles Robert Burleigh and Elizabeth Miller. Specific information regarding the location of his birth would be appreciated. One reference states "Robert Burleigh of New Orleans" but birth records for his older sisters are found in St. Landry Parish.

Robert Burleigh fils was married to Mary Magdeline Miller, daughter of George Miller and Catherine Ritter, on 15 Oct 1808. Four years later, he served in the War of 1812., enlisting as a Private with the 16th Regiment (Thompson's) of the Louisiana Militia in St. Landry Parish.

Robert died at Bayou Boeuf. He is buried at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in St. Landry parish. No ceremony was performed.

Children of Robert Burleigh fils and Mary Magdeline Miller included:

Sarah Burleigh Gardiner (1808-1891)
Robert Burleigh (1812-1812)
Mary Magdeline Burleigh (1813-___)
Anne Burleigh Butler (1816-__)
Marie Aveline "Evelina" Burleigh Blalock (1818-1918)
Gilbert Burleigh (1819-1904)
Elizabeth Burleigh Soileau (1822-1880)
Louis Burleigh (1825-1825)
Marie Teliza Burleigh Sawyer (1826-1870)
Marie Clarissa (1830-1830)

Additional Notes: Robert, Louis and Marie Clarissa died soon after birth. Mary Magdeline was born on 20 Dec 1813 and baptized (Opel. Ch.: v.2, p. 22), but no additional records have been found. Daughter Evelina Burleigh Blalock lived to be over 100 years of age.

More about spouse Mary Magdeline Miller:
Mary Magdeline Miller was baptized in Opelousas on 20 Aug 1786. Fr. Joseph deArazena officiated, with Jacob Miller and Magdelaine Ritter serving as sponsors. (Opel. Ch.: v.1-A, p.59). Mary Magdeline married Robert Burleigh fils at the Opelousas Courthouse on 8 Oct 1808 (Opel Ct. Hse.: Mar #16). She appears as head of household on the 1860 Census, with plantation manager James Reed (age 23) as the only other person in the residence. James Reed is only managing a portion of the original Burleigh property at this time; the rest has already passed to other family members. By the 1870 Census, this property has also been passed on, to daughter Evelina Burleigh Blalock. No additional record for Mary Magdeline can be found, so her death is presumed between 1860 and 1870. It is possible that Mary Magdeline is buried alongside husband Robert in St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery, or she could be buried in Dubuisson Cemetery. Please see notes for daughter Aveline Marie (called Evelina), who is linked below.
